Guy Pearce has explained why he starred in what he calls "a bunch of shit" films. The former Neighbours actor is currently nominated for an Oscar for The Brutalist, but he admitted that he knowingly signed on to star in some movies he wasn't keen on for a couple of years.

“In the old days you were either a theatre actor or a film actor, and if you got stuck in a soap you were the lowest of the low — but what an opportunity,” the star said of landing the role of the handsome and hardworking Mike Young on the show.

Pearce was on Neighbours in the mid-to-late 1980s and reprised the role for the show's original 2022 finale (though it's since been revived). He noted of getting his start on a soap: That said, it really was frowned upon.
