The House narrowly passed the budget, 217 to 213, sending it to the Senate. The measure keeps the government funded through the end of the federal fiscal year on Sept. 30. All 43 California Democrats voted no, while all nine Republicans voted yes.

The Senate plans to take up a House-passed bill to fund the government through September beginning on Friday, which needs the support of Democrats to move forward.

The government runs out of funding Friday at midnight, leaving Democrats to decide whether to help Republicans pass a bill to avoid a shutdown or block the bill and be blamed for triggering one.
