Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) insisted in an address to Californians on Tuesday night that “democracy is under assault” by President Donald Trump after he deployed the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles without the governor’s approval.

The cost estimate came during a feisty exchange as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth testified before the House on Tuesday.
