UPDATE: DeSean Jackson has been officially announced as the new head coach of Delaware State's football team, per NBC Sports. "DeSean Jackson is a perfect fit for our institution -- incredibly competitive, optimistic about the prospects for our collective future, and focused on the fundamentals of the institution: students first."

PHILADELPHIA − As a wide receiver, DeSean Jackson had few peers. The former Eagle could run past just about every cornerback who tried covering him one-on-one. "He was one of a kind," current Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown said. But as a coach?

Former Philadelphia Eagles star DeSean Jackson was hired as the coach of the Delaware State Hornets, who compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, in December.

But Jackson was unceremoniously released by former Eagles head coach Chip Kelly in the spring of 2014, coming off Jackson's best season in the NFL when he had 82 receptions for 1,332 yards. He was signed right away by Washington, and spent the next three seasons there. Jackson had some of his best games against the Eagles during that time.

So far Sanders’ coaching staff includes only former Woodrow Wilson head coach Travis Clark, a longtime mentor who was with him Wednesday. But he has already attracted about a dozen recruits since his hiring became public Dec. 26 and pledged to also build a strong coaching crew that may, he hinted, also have some familiar names.

After being named head coach of the Delaware State University Hornets in December, DeSean Jackson was officially introduced during a ceremony on Jan. 8.

The move comes less than a week after Norfolk State, another MEAC school, hired former Pro Bowl QB Michael Vick as its coach.
