The U.S. Department of Agriculture has suspended funding for research and programs at the University of Maine, the school said on Tuesday, after President Donald Trump clashed with Governor Janet Mills over the state's refusal to ban transgender athletes from girls' sports.

The University of Maine’s funding from a federal agency has been paused, less than three weeks after Governor Janet Mills publicly feuded with President Trump over transgender athletes, officials said.

The United States Department of Agriculture is temporarily pulling its funding for the University of Maine System a week after the Trump administration sent a violation notice to Gov. Janet Mills (D-ME) for allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.
