A brush fire that started on Maui over the weekend has resulted in evacuations and burned hundreds of acres. On June 15, Maui County stated that the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) ordered residents “near Mile Markers 24 and 25 of Kahikinui” to evacuate.

KAHIKINUI, Hawaii (Island News) – The third day of the Kahikinui brush fire remains at 93% containment and 330 acres as of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the County of Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety (MFD). Crews continue to work on extinguishing the hot spots and gain full containment.

The Kahikinui brush fire has spread to 500 acres mauka of the Pi’ilani Highway near mile marker 24 and 25, according to a news release from Maui County. A containment percentage has not yet been determined, the release said, and no injuries or structural damages have been reported.

Maui County firefighters are continuing efforts to contain the Kahikinui brush fire that ignited Sunday morning and quickly spread across dry and steep terrain near Piʻilani Highway.

Firefighters on Maui are responding to an active brush fire in the Kahikinui Homestead area around Mile Marker 24 on Piʻilani Hwy on the southern slope of Haleakalā.
