Shubman Gill's ‘inexperience’ has been pointed out as he becomes the clear frontrunner to become India's next Test captain.

After Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket, young top-order batter Shubman Gill is being looked at as the next Test skipper. There are concerns over Jasprit Bumrah's fitness who led India in two Tests on Australian soil which have worked against him getting the leading role for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from the Tests, ODIs remain the only format the players will be active. The main goal will be to win the ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Virat Kohli, however, will continue to represent India in ODIs. 2027 World Cup will now be the goal for both Virat and Rohit Sharma. Rohit Sharma had retired from Tests last week.

The five-Test match series between India and England is scheduled to start from June 20 and Shubman Gill will likely to lead the side.
