A moderately strong, 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck in Texas on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The temblor happened at 11:23 p.m. Central time about 33 miles northwest of Toyah, Tex., data from the agency shows. U.S.G.S. data earlier reported that the magnitude was 4.9.

Fire- and storm-ravaged Malibu, Calif., endured two relatively minor earthquakes followed by another in Idyllwild Saturday afternoon while West Texas recorded a 5.0 earthquake late Friday night.

The 5.0 magnitude earthquake is tied for the sixth strongest in state history. Scientists have warned for years that increased fracking in West Texas is causing higher earthquake activity.

The earthquake happened around 10:23 p.m. MT, nearly 33 miles northwest of Toyah, Texas, about 190 miles from El Paso.
