President Donald Trump has broad authority to revoke protected land designated as national monuments by past presidents, the Justice Department said in a new legal opinion.

Trump officials say presidents can abolish monuments created by predecessors, and California's newest ones — Chuckwalla and Sáttítla Highlands — are vulnerable.

The new opinion states that presidents may remove or reduce protections for monuments that “never were or no longer are deserving” of such status.
