The 10,396-acre Hughes fire reached 56% containment Friday as first responders made progress controlling multiple blazes burning in Los Angeles County, which is expected to receive rain over the weekend that could be capable of producing floods and mudslides in several burned areas.

The Laguna fire, one of the latest major blazes to strike Southern California, prompted new evacuation warnings in Ventura County on Thursday. Newsweek reached out to the Ventura County Fire Department for comment on Thursday.

Eaton Fire initially started 6:18 p.m. Jan. 7 in Los Angeles County. Since its discovery 15 days ago, it has burned 14,021 acres. A fire crew of 1,837 has been working on site and, as of Wednesday evening, they managed to contain 95% of the fire. However, investigations into the cause are ongoing.

The two largest fires, the Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades and the Eaton Fire near Pasadena, remain active. One of the latest, the Hughes Fire in the Castaic area, has prompted evacuation orders for tens of thousands of people.

Gov. Gavin Newsom will sign legislation Thursday providing $2.5 billion in funding to relief efforts in Los Angeles County, where two massive wildfires killed 28 people and left behind a trail of destruction this month.
