HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – Following May’s tornadoes that tore through Kentucky, FEMA is offering assistance to survivors that were affected. The counties that were affected included Union, Caldwell, Laurel, Pulaski, Russell, and Trigg counties. FEMA is encouraging every homeowner or renter who suffered damage or loss to apply.

More severe weather is forecast to move into the commonwealth May 20, including in some of the areas hit hardest by recent tornadoes.

Kentuckians who own homes or rent in 16 counties damaged by severe February storms and floods have less than a week to apply for federal disaster assistance. The deadline to apply is Sunday, May 25, according to a news release from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

At least 19 Kentuckians died and dozens more were injured after a tornado struck the southeast part of the state last week.

The latest disaster declaration will help Kentucky recover after an EF-4 tornado and other severe weather ripped through the state in May.

Eleven requests for disaster declarations are pending at the agency — a sign that it is reducing disaster aid to states, experts say.
