Despite this moderate stance, China considers Tibet part of its territory and has labeled him a “separatist,” asserting its right to appoint his successor.

The Dalai Lama’s book reveals that his successor will be born in the free world, firmly establishing the reincarnation outside China.

The Tibetan Buddhist leader said the choice of a successor should be made according to traditional practices and that lamas and monks would conduct the search, setting up a clash with Beijing’s communist rulers.
